A patio is the room outside the house: somewhere to eat, sit and watch the yard. It also has to shed water, hold its level and cope with the freeze and thaw of a Long Island winter.

We start with the ground. The old surface is removed, the base is excavated and compacted, and the slope is set so water runs away from the house. Then the pavers are laid, cut at the edges and finished with an edge restraint and joint sand.

We work with concrete pavers, clay pavers, bluestone and natural stone, and we can match an existing patio or build a new one from the layout up.

A driveway takes more weight than any other surface around a house, so the base under it matters more than the pattern on top. We excavate to the right depth, compact in layers and set the fall so water leaves the driveway instead of pooling against the garage or the street.

We install paver driveways, driveway aprons and borders, and we can tie a new driveway into an existing walkway or front path. Block and cobble patterns, herringbone and running bond are all available.

If an old asphalt or concrete driveway is failing, the estimate will say whether the base can be reused or has to be rebuilt.

Stone is what gives a project its character: a bluestone tread on the front steps, a stone veneer wall by the pool, a fireplace surround in the living room. It is also less forgiving than pavers, so the cutting and setting have to be right.

We work with bluestone, granite, limestone and manufactured stone veneer. That includes treads and landings, caps and copings, wall veneer, fireplace surrounds and stone borders around patios and drives.

The estimate covers the material, the cutting and the setting, and we will tell you where a natural stone detail is worth the cost and where a paver will do the same job for less.

A walkway is used every day, in every kind of weather, often by people who are not looking at their feet. That makes the base, the width and the fall more important than the pattern.

We build straight and curved walkways in pavers and bluestone, with borders, edging and steps where the ground changes level. The path is set out around the way you actually approach the house, not just the shortest line from the drive.

Walkways are also a good place to start if you want to improve the front of a property without rebuilding everything at once: a new path and steps can change the way the whole entrance looks.

A pool deck has to do two jobs: look right around the water and move water away from the pool and the house. Both start with the base and the slope, not with the paver color.

We build pool decks and surrounds in pavers and stone, including curved edges, coping and the transition from the deck to the patio or lawn. Where the deck meets a pool wall or a raised edge, the details are planned before the first course is laid.

The surface is finished to be comfortable underfoot and to stay stable around the wet area. If you are renovating an existing deck, we will look at what is under it before recommending a surface.

A retaining wall is a structural piece of work. It holds back soil, and if it is built without the right base, drainage and block, it will lean or fail.

We build walls in segmental block, natural stone and veneered block, from low garden walls to taller walls that create a level patio or a raised planting bed. Behind the wall we use the right drainage and backfill so water does not build up pressure.

Not every wall needs an engineer, but height, soil and load decide how it should be built. If your wall is more than a low garden wall, we will say so in the estimate and explain the options.

Where a path meets a slope, the steps are the part that has to be right. A comfortable rise and tread, a landing where the door opens and a handrail where it is needed make the difference between a path that works and one that people avoid.

We build paver walkways with integrated steps and landings in the same material as the path, so the result reads as one piece rather than a path with a staircase bolted on.

If you already have steps that are too steep, too narrow or moving away from the house, the estimate can cover rebuilding just that section.

A fire pit extends the use of a patio into the evening and into the cooler months. It can be a simple stone ring or a built-in feature with a seating wall, and either way it has to sit on a surface that stays level and stable.

We build fire pits in block and stone, with paver patios and seating walls around them where the layout allows. The base is prepared like any other hardscape, and the pit is positioned with the wind, the seating and the distance from the house in mind.

If you want a gas line or an insert, we will tell you what has to be prepared before the pit is built so the finished feature works the way you expect.

Steps are the part of a project people notice first and use most. A front entry with the wrong rise, a loose tread or a landing that is too small makes the whole entrance feel wrong.

We build steps and stairs in bluestone, pavers and block: front entries, short flights between a patio and a lawn, and steps that turn a sloping yard into usable levels. Treads are set on a compacted base and finished to match the surrounding surface.

If the existing steps are moving or the risers are uneven, we will look at whether the problem is the steps themselves or the ground under them.

Sometimes the project is not one element but the whole yard: a patio that flows into a fire pit area, a wall that makes the space level, a walkway that connects it all to the house.

We plan the layout as one job, so levels, drainage and materials work together instead of being fixed on separately. That means agreeing the layout and the main materials first, then pricing the work in stages if you want to build it over time.
